Cuban National Awards for best designs 2018 announced

Cuba's National Design office ONDi has announced in May the 2018 Awards for best Designs, at the end of the 15th Design Week in Havana, which is dedicated to boost the role of design in Cuba.

The ONDi award is the highest state recognition in terms of design granted to Cuban designers living in Cuba, who have developed during the two years prior to the award of the Prize, projects, products or systems of products in the categories of Visual and Industrial design.

In the category of Visual Communication (professional level) there were 2 winners of the ONDi Award: one award went to the design of the Pablo Milanes Discography Collection for its visual impact that unifies the different graphics of the original covers of the Cuban singer-songwriter during the period 1974-2015. The designers Laura Cuendias Abreu and Yosvenky Hernández Camiñas contributed to the collection, general guidelines, system of promotional applications, infographics, restoration of documentation and packaging design to contain the 50 titles of the complete works of Pablo.

Also in the category of Visual Communication (professional level) the award went to the redesign of Granma newspaper by Ernesto Niebla and collective of authors.

In the category of Industrial Design (professional level), the award went to the Mondrian project which takes interesting concept of use, reducing the volume of furniture and its consequent perception in space, with an aesthetic that allows it to adapt to diverse contexts.

In the category of Industrial Design (student level), the award went to the mobile surgical room, conceived by Brayan Artiles Robaina and Jesús López Garlobo.

In the category of Visual Design (student level), the award went to the System of Visual Identity (logos and signs), of the Ministry of Higher Education, by students Patricia Valdéz Bacallao and Darlyn Robert Errasti.

The National Design Office -ONDi- the main organizer of the event, turned it into an interactive gathering of designers, students, entrepreneurs, researchers and specialists from different areas of knowledge, called on to think and discuss how design could contribute more to the prosperity of the country. Gisela Herrero, head of the Office, announced the second design biennial of Havana, is scheduled for May of next year.
